Do salt lamps work? Salt lamps, and mainly himalayan salt lamps, are a very popular item to place at home since they are believed to offer us several health benefits such as:

  • Improving air quality
  • Boosting your mood
  • Improve sleep quality and reduce insomnia
  • Reduce allergies and better respiratory function
  • Neutralize electromagnetic radiation
  • Reduce static electricity in the air

All these characteristics would really improve your well-being at home, but can we trust in a salt lamp to fix our “unhealthy” homes? do salt lamps work?


The main theory behind the salt lamp magic

The main explanation behind the benefits offered by salt lamps is the belief that they produce negative ions. Let me explain. Are you familiar with that moment before the storm when you might feel a slight headache, tension or even pains? If you are, then I’m sure you are aware of the amazing feeling of relief the storm brings as soon as it starts pouring down. 

The main reason behind this relief is the abundance of negative ions brought by the storm.


The power of negative ions

Life requires a balance of positive and negative ions and nature has plenty of ways to supply these negative ions: storms, waterfalls, sea waves, cosmic rays, radioactivity… 

But most of these natural suppliers of negative ions don’t reach our indoor air. Moreover, our modern lifestyle ensures an extra production of positive ions (pollutants, technology, air conditioners, static electricity…).

However, Salt Lamps don’t produce negative ions. The few laboratory measurements done to verify the certainty of these statements have sadly reported the incapacity of these lamps to ionize the air. 

Therefore we cannot say that salt lamps are air ionizers and we should reframe our speech. Because the fact that they don’t have the capability to ionize the air doesn’t necessarily mean that they don’t have any health benefits for us.

Our health at home isn’t only defined by our lack of diagnosed illness but by an overall feeling of well-being. Certainly today we still have no scientific proof that salt lamps could bring in extra properties.
