How our indoor environment triggers Migraines

Migraines can be triggered by a wide variety of causes and some of these are easily avoidable with our 4 home remedies: understand your surroundings, detect the Health Hazards and take action.

These 4 home remedies are:

Improve Air Quality

Air quality is a very important aspect of our Health at Home. An adult breathes an average of 10,000 litres of air every day and every particle or chemical that mixes within this air will get into our bodies. Some of these are what we call VOC -Volatile Organic Compounds- which have the capability to cause discomforts and symptoms in us, among which we find Migraines and Headaches.

VOCs are commonly found in our indoor environments and we should try to avoid them as much as possible since most discomforts easily disappear as soon as we stop the exposure.

How can we avoid VOCs?

In order to avoid or reduce our exposure to VOCs we will have to check some of the products we commonly use at home and probably substitute them for a healthier option without VOC (usually indicated). These products we should beware of are:

  • Cleaning products
  • Air fresheners
  • Paints
  • Glues
  • Pesticides
  • Building material and furniture
  • Carpets or vinyl flooring
  • Burning wood or tobacco

How to improve the air quality at home?

Our indoor air quality isn’t only determined by the presence of VOCs but other types of gases such as radon, particles like dust, mold or the levels of humidity or CO2

In order to improve our indoor air quality we should reduce or avoid the use of pollutants but always in combination with our home remedy key ingredient: Ventilation.

Ventilation freshens the air, avoids air stagnation, eliminates harmful substances,  balances humidity and reduces CO2 levels.

Reduce Electromagnetic Pollution

Our lifestyle today inevitably entails the use of electricity, appliances, technology and communication networks; all of which emit an Electromagnetic Radiation. And an excess of both low frequency and high frequency electromagnetic fields can lead to a series of discomforts including migraines or headaches.

Is there anything we can do to avoid Electromagnetic pollution?

As you might imagine it is very difficult to avoid these radiations especially in cities and during work hours. We can take some measures to help reducing this exposure:

  • Turn off the Wi-Fi when you aren’t using it.
  • Turn your phone off or put it in flight mode when you aren’t using it.
  • Separate your phone or any other device from your body. Leaving the phone on the table will have a lesser damage on your health than keeping it in your pocket.
  • Unplug any device or appliance when unused.
  • Avoid cordless devices as much as possible.
  • When the sources of high electromagnetic radiation come from an external source it is possible to shield them.

Some offices and buildings due to the excess of these radiations cause what we know as Sick Building Syndrome which causes multitude of symptoms among which we encounter Migraines.

Healthy Architecture Assessment

This is a serious situation that needs to be solved and often requires refurbishment or renovation. This is a delicate issue so do not hesitate to write us if you find yourself in this situation; we offer Architecture Assessment to assess the works required to resolve Sick Building Syndrome.

Better Indoor lighting

The right light is so important for our wellbeing in so many aspects including our focus now: avoiding migraines.

How can light trigger migraines?

  • Flickering lights: Flickering lights such as fluorescent or compact fluorescent light bulbs cause flickering even if imperceptible to the human eye, and flicker is a migraine trigger.
  • Blue light: It’s spreading quite fast now the knowledge that screens emit a great amount of blue light and that contributes to migraines and headaches. Blue light filtered glasses might be of great help to avoid this issue. These glasses can be very helpful as well if your lighting environment contains high levels of blue light: Clinics, Laboratories, TV studios… Keep in mind that blue light doesn’r refer to the color of the light, morning sunlight is bluish but doesn’t fall into this category. The damading blue light is that one containing a pic of blue in the light spectrum. A healthy light source should be as close to the sunlight as possible, meaning it should always contain a full spectrum no matter what the light color resulting from it.

How to improve indoor lighting at home?

Improving indoor air lighting is an easy home remedies to avoid migraines. Just avoid Fluorescent or flickering lights and reduce the exposure to blue light as much as possible, either by reducing the sources of blue light or by using a filter such as the blue light glasses.

Avoid Geopathic Stress

A Geopathic stress area is a location where the Earth Energies, those energies that come from the Earth, have a higher frequency. When we spend long periods of time on a Geopathic Stress Area doing activities that require a lower environmental frequency we can develop symptoms such as migraines.

We should be especially careful with Geopathic Stress while sleeping since the migraine won’t only be a result of the overexposure to these particular locations but the poor sleep resulting from this exposure is as well a migraine trigger.

In order to avoid Geopathic Stress you can get an expert’s geobiology consultation or join our tutorials if you are interested in learning more about it.
