Diffusing essential oils, when done properly, can bring you and your home amazing benefits, but when it isn’t properly done, what started with a good intention could finish with quite an unhealthy place.

Essential Oils are becoming incredibly popular especially among those who care about a Healthy Home.

Used for a crazy amount of purposes, essential oils are now a must have at home. There are also several methods to use essential oils, usually the one that has a bigger impact on our health at home (both positive and negative) is the diffuser.

Diffusing essential oils, when done properly, can bring you and your home amazing benefits, I myself diffuse and use essential oils for a long list of purposes. But when it isn’t properly done, what started with a good intention could finish with quite an unhealthy place.

If we choose to use an essential oil diffuser as a recipe for a healthy home, there are 5 things you should consider before you start

1. Humidity

Most essential oil diffusers add humidity into the air. While some climates will really benefit from a humidity increase, others won’t. A healthy home needs to have a relative humidity of 40-60%. If you still want to diffuse oils while living in a high humidity area look for a diffuser that produces less moisture or no moisture at all such as the nebulizing diffuser.

2. Toxic substances

In the market you can easily encounter oils -to use in a diffuser- that aren’t pure. Those often contain toxic substances and emit VOC’s -Volatile Organic Compounds- which affect our health. You can learn more about toxic substances in our article The smell of clean in our homes.

3. Dosage

An increasing fear of “chemicals” is bringing us to blindly trust any product tagged as natural. ”If it is natural, it has to be safe”, but this isn’t actually true since often the products tagged as natural haven’t been tested and are usually used naively. Some oils aren’t toxic themselves but become toxic and can cause serious problems when used in doses that are too high.

4. Purifying

Certain essential oils have antibacterial properties so they can be helpful to reduce bacteria and fungus in indoor air. However, essential oil diffusers aren’t air purifiers, most of the substances and particles present in the indoor air won’t be cleaned by essential oils.

5. Just a complement.

Diffusing essential oils won’t just turn your home into a healthy space, they can be a great and useful complement when used properly, but they are only a complement. A healthy home is composed of a multiple amount of facts and needs from you to establish a series of healthy habits. If you want to know more about what makes a healthy home you can read our article Healthy house, healthy you. Discover the Building Biology.

Essential oils can bring amazing benefits to our homes and our health but remember that natural doesn’t necessity mean healthy. When diffusing oils you should:

  • Have a clear goal.
  • Do not use them as a substitute of any of your health at home habits.
  • Research, read the tags and ask for professional advice.
